Baburam Bhattarai, born on 18 June 1954 in Khoplang, Gorkha, is a Nepali politician, intellectual, and former Prime Minister. He played an important role in the Maoist insurgency and debates around Nepal’s peace and constitutional processes. Educated in India (architecture, planning, PhD), he has authored works on underdevelopment and regional structure in Nepal, and shifted from mainstream Maoist politics to more centrist/socialist democratic approaches. Over the years, he has founded new parties and remained an influential figure in Nepal’s political evolution.
