Bidya Devi Bhandari has been a major figure in Nepali politics, especially as the first woman to hold the presidency (2015-2023). Born in 1961 in Bhojpur, she entered politics through student activism, rising through the ranks of the CPN-UML, holding cabinet roles (including Defence Minister and Environment & Population Minister), and serving as party vice-chair before being elected President. During her presidency she focused on women’s rights, environmental protection, and symbolic representation of gender equality in Nepal. After completing her term as President, she resumed political affiliation with UML.
