About
Sushila Karki was born on 7 June 1952 in Biratnagar, eastern Nepal, eldest of seven siblings. She studied political science and law, teaching briefly and then practicing law before being appointed to Nepal’s Supreme Court. In 2016 she became Nepal’s first female Chief Justice, a position she used to challenge corruption and enforce judicial independence. After retiring from the judiciary, she stayed out of party politics but retained a reputation for integrity. In September 2025, following widespread youth-led protests and political crisis, she was appointed interim Prime Minister with the responsibility of restoring order, combating corruption, and overseeing the path to new elections.
